The First Law Is Consent

Every dynamic worth having begins with a yes that was freely given and can be freely taken back.

People imagine that power is something taken. It is not. In any healthy dynamic, power is given — knowingly, deliberately, and on terms both people understand. Without that, there is no dominance. There is only harm.

Psychologists describe consent as informed, specific, and revocable. Informed means you understand what you are agreeing to. Specific means a yes to one thing is not a yes to everything. Revocable means it can be withdrawn at any moment, without explanation and without penalty.

This is the paradox at the heart of it: the person who yields holds the deepest authority of all. They decide whether the door opens. They decide when it closes.

So when you think about power, start here. Not with control, but with permission. Everything else is built on top of it.
